Triton Supports Local Environment With Big Canal Clean-Up
Triton, the UK’s leading shower manufacturer, has partnered with The Canal & River Trust for the first in a series of six clean-up days. The initiative is designed to tackle a sponsored stretch of canal located close to its factory headquarters, in Nuneaton.
On 18 May, a group of 12 volunteers from Triton formed a working party to tackle the build-up of rubbish that has been left along walkways, undergrowth and in the canal, with the aim of helping improve the area for wildlife and the local community to enjoy.
Activities on the day included picking litter from canal banks and using nets to remove bottles and waste from the water. Some colleagues even boarded a boat to get rid of hard-to-reach paper, plastic and other unwanted debris, which might otherwise pose a threat to marine life and birds.
Going below the surface, magnet fishing was used to extract metal from the canal, while overhanging vegetation was assessed and removed in places where it might prove hazardous to tow-path users. A few finishing touches were also added, including painting bollards and improving the appearance of fencing around an access point located close to Triton’s building.
The idea for the initiative came from an employee using Triton’s ‘Green Ideas Board’, whereby anyone in the company can make suggestions – big or small – that will have a positive impact on the environment.
David Tutton, Managing Director at Triton, said: “Alongside challenges related to domestic water usage and energy wastage, pollution affecting the waterways and oceans surrounding the British Isles is a huge concern. Our collaboration with The Canal and River Trust will therefore be the first of many ventures undertaken together.
“In 2021, Triton also joined forces with the Marine Conservation Society, pledging to support the charity in its mission to create a cleaner, better-protected ocean that we can all enjoy. Our latest canal initiative is just one of the many ways in which we are making improvements, with members of our team quite literally rolling up their sleeves to help make a difference – starting on our doorstep.
“Going forward, having sent nothing to landfill since 2015, we will continue to focus on driving down waste within our business, while promoting the huge part that electric showers have to play – helping consumers to use less water and electricity, therefore saving money and helping the planet as a result. We are also aiming to gain carbon neutral certification this year, working closely with the Carbon Trust.”
