The future is…induction and clever extraction
Published:  11 January, 2012

It would be impossible for any observers of the kitchen appliance market not to have noticed the amazing product development of hoods and hobs. Twenty years ago, a hood was something to hide away behind a canopy or a door front but nowadays they have become fashion statements due to lifestyle changes, the incredible imagination of product designers and the introduction of raw materials like stainless steel, glass and chrome.

The form of a cooker hood these days can resemble a work of art and some can be positioned at an angle above the hob (like a painting), as a panel on the ceiling, as a glass light shade or can even be hidden within a work surface and rise telescopically (powered by a motor) for use as a downdraft extractor when needed. The last three, especially, lend themselves to an island unit and most can be operated by remote control.

However, it’s not just the form that has improved, its function has too as the latest extractors/hoods are more powerful than ever and yet run almost silently. Hobs too have improved beyond recognition with consumers able to choose from a raft of designs to various cooking options including gas, electric and induction.

So what does this mean for kitchen retailers? Increased opportunities! Retailers must remind themselves and their sales teams of the fact that unless you are somehow involved in the market or have actually recently already purchased a new kitchen, which is unlikely of course, consumers are unaware of the options open to them, which create a platform for you to make higher profit sales through the education of your customer. For example, at Caple we are witnessing an upswing in the sales of induction hobs - it’s my guess that the majority of consumers who first set out to purchase a new kitchen have little or no knowledge of this type of cooking.
