Bathroom Conference 2011 meets the S-word head on
Published:  13 December, 2011

Described as the biggest, brightest and best yet, this year’s Bathroom Conference tackled the serious and tricky subject of “sustainability” and with the world’s population just topping the 7 billion mark the timing of conference could not have been more appropriate. A record turnout of delegates from across the industry and government met in Oxfordshire for a full day of presentations and discussions hosted by Sue Nelson, former science correspondent of BBC Radio 4.

Nelson referred to the “S-word” on a number of occasions during the day and although it may be a turn-off to some she reiterated the fact that, whether we like it or not, we all have to address the issue.

Speaker after speaker commented that the bathroom industry was making a real difference by developing bathroom products which are remarkably successful in reducing water consumption.

Two of the leaders in the bathroom industry supply chain - Tim Pollard of Wolseley UK and Ben Earl of B&Q - described how their companies were getting to grips with marketing, merchanting and retailing sustainable products. Attitudes to saving water are slowly changing and we are all being nudged into accepting water efficiency as culturally acceptable.

“Ten years ago the word ‘sustainability’ was not even in our dictionaries,” commented Nelson.

Today it’s the most talked about topic.
