As the year draws to a close, the market remains much the same as twelve months ago: the top end is holding up and so is the value-oriented bottom end, but it’s the middle that’s being squeezed the most. Manufacturers are locked into a constant cycle of promotions to tempt the customer into parting with his or her cash.
And what tempts them at the moment are taps which combine good quality and value for money with design looks that have a universal appeal and will offer longevity. The swan neck spout with simple levers is a classic favourite for this, easily straddling the design boundary between traditional and modern. A year ago £200 was the benchmark price for an average mid-market tap but it has now lowered to £100-150 as consumers demand more affordable options. Functionality remains important in the emerging new tap styles with pull-out sprays no longer seen as a premium but a standard option. Filtration taps are definitely growing strongly in popularity spurred by the wider choice of styles and price points now available. Our filtration sales are up 21% on last year.
Economists and the media are all predicting another tough year ahead but on a positive note, we are looking forward to KBB2012 and its familiar beacon that draws the industry together. We have seen direct growth from our presence there in 2010 and so it’s good to see companies returning this time, underlining the importance of continuing to invest in their brand and showcase new products.
