VitrA UK’s Darren Paxford discusses trends regarding freestanding baths in the current market: The upper end of the market for freestanding baths has remained steady, and there are two VitrA baths that sell particularly well – the Cocoon (160 x 80) oval bath which can be free standing, or positioned against a wall using an adapter. Also the Pure (180 x 80) design which features four different finishes of panels and an innovative wooden roller top.
Bathroom space – floor area – is a crucial factor in choosing a freestanding bath. Plumbing and water supply has to be re-organised and the freestanding bath generally requires floor space on all or at least three sides. The number of home owners opting to move a freestanding bath out of the bathroom and into the bedroom is limited and this tends only to be at the very top end of the market. While VitrA still experience a high demand for the more traditional “slipper” bath style there is strong evidence that the contemporary mono-block design is gaining popularity.
In terms of technical developments that retailers should be aware of, in order to help drive sales, the integral overflow that VitrA have introduced is a major technical and aesthetic advantage. This ensures no unsightly holes below the rim on the inside of the bath as the water level is automatically monitored via an arrangement of pipework in the skin of the bath which then automatically releases excess water below the level of the waste to prevent overflow or spillage.
