Steel sets the style
Published:  22 August, 2011

Visit a professional restaurant kitchen and you will see stainless steel appliances, sinks and surfaces. Hard wearing, ultra hygienic and ideal for any task that involves food preparation, steel has migrated out of the professional kitchen into the home – and it is hardly surprising that its popularity just keeps on growing.

When steel appliances were first introduced, they were at a premium price point but the material is now available right across the board, giving retailers the opportunity to offer style that is perceived as upmarket to every customer. The availability of stainless steel appliances makes complete co-ordination easy - especially with designs where things like compacts are used to create a cooking or beverage centre. Stainless steel appliances can compliment a contemporary or traditional look too by effectively mixing with any colour furniture. Stainless steel appliances also add value to a property - look at any estate agent’s description and you will see “stainless steel appliances” in the kitchen singled out as a selling point.

The growth in popularity of undermounted steel sinks has further enhanced the profit opportunity for retailers as these sinks can only be installed with higher price solid surface worktops.

There used to be a lot of comment on the problem of fingerprints on stainless steel, which some manufacturers have tried to address with fingerprint resistant coatings. This is not a method we use at CDA however - the coating gives the steel a yellowish cast, interfering with the natural beauty of the metal. Also, over time it can wear, leaving an unsightly residue. Instead we use high grade steel and we offer a simple 2-step e-cloth cleaning system - all that is needed is a quick wipe over and all the finger prints disappear, without the use of any chemicals.

In these eco conscious times it is also worth remembering that stainless steel is a completely recyclable material - in fact all new steel contains a proportion of old steel.

For years I have been asked what will replace stainless steel. Who knows, maybe something that hasn’t been invented yet, but for now it is the most attractive, most practical and most desirable material we have, and rightly so.
