Water saving with Impulse Bathrooms
Published:  22 August, 2011

According to recent comments from Lord Krebs of the Influential Committee on Climate Change, the government’s green advisors, the government should ‘roll out meters’ by enforcing the fitting of water meters in all homes to help fight global warming. The Committee reports that water supplies in some parts of the UK are already ‘near their limits’ and that five water supply companies say they would struggle to meet demand in some areas in drought conditions.

“For several years we have been on record in the bathroom industry magazines pointing out that water saving simply will not happen without either compulsory regulation or compulsory water metering.  Impulse Bathrooms favour the latter as it allows people to be aware of the amount of potable water they consume and the cost of this to the household, and therefore to consider opportunities for water saving” says Impulse Bathrooms’ Gary Hawkins.

Impulse Bathrooms introduced their water saving technology on a range of their WC’s some 6 years ago, recognising that this was potentially an important issue for the UK bathroom industry.  The average potable water consumption of 150 litres per person per day was recognised as unsustainable in government consultation papers which resulted in water saving measures being included in the Code for Sustainable Homes and changes to Building Regulations Part G.  Developing a 4.5/3 litre dual flush mechanism is not just a matter of reducing water in the cistern, it is vital that the volume, speed and direction of the flush is such that the pan is properly cleaned.  In addition regulations require 2.5 litres of trailing water to ensure sufficient water flow to clear soil through to the drains.  These factors are fundamental for both appearance and hygiene reasons in the home and for the efficiency of the whole drainage system.  Simply putting a brick in the water cistern as was previously suggested during earlier droughts – or todays more refined equivalent of a specially designed inflatable plastic bag – is no solution.  Many thousands of WC’s still flush at 9 or even 12 litres and were not designed to clean using less than the prescribed flush volumes.  However they do need to be replaced by modern WC’s, with water saving technology – and these don’t cost any more than non-water saving WC’s.

Impulse Bathrooms offers a wide range of these water saving WC’s from entry level such as the Pedigree Eco to top of the range luxury suites such as Radius Deluxe and Constance so that there are style solutions across all price points.

Water saving WC’s are also included in the recently introduced Comfort range which offers increased height WC’s and washbasins for easy use for those with impaired mobility or for taller people, as the human race statistically continues to grow taller and at a fairly rapid rate.

Despite having had water saving products available for several years, Impulse Bathrooms say that at present there is only limited demand for this “People buy our suites for the style and quality they want for their new bathrooms.  Water saving is, frankly, hardly on their selection criteria.  We agree with Lord Krebs that water saving will only become a real issue for the general public – there are of course exceptions who are eco-friendly – when they can see how much it costs i.e. when it hits them in the pocket.  And water metering would seem to be the most practical means of enforcement” concludes Gary.
