Bathroom design with a conscience
Published:  22 August, 2011

Roca has always been committed to the environment in terms of both its products and its production processes. The business is keenly aware that water is a unique, limited resource, and has spent more than 50 years developing water and energy saving devices for its products.

Roca’s multi-award winning W+W is a prime example of the company’s commitment to design and innovation as well as sustainability. Created by the Roca Innovation Lab, the W+W is an all-in-one washbasin and WC, designed to maximize space and conserve water.

This ground breaking idea, incorporating Roca’s new ‘water-reuse’ technology, uses waste water from the basin to fill the WC cistern, thereby reducing water usage by up to 25% compared to a standard 6/3 litre dual-flush WC.

Furthermore the majority of Roca’s single lever basin mixers are fitted with a hi-tech “Eco-disk” cartridge which is covered by a lifetime guarantee. Not only does this reduce the level of water consumption by up to 50%, it also helps to save energy with its advanced temperature regulator.

Complimenting the government’s drives for water conservation, all Roca cisterns are dual flush. Roca's Double Flush systems (D2D and D4D) have two installed push-buttons 6/3 and 4.5/3 litre flush options are available and also feature delayed fill valves, stopping fresh water entering the cistern until the flush valve closes after the cistern has completely emptied. These simple yet innovative design features can help to save an incredible 60% of water, reducing the total consumption per person per year to 4,320 litres on average.   Roca also offers a range of flow regulators and limiting valves for its taps and showers.

Roca’s latest addition to its portfolio of environmentally-friendly products is Drain News, a truly revolutionary waste system that displays the amount of water that has passed through it, making the user aware of how little or how much water they use. Flow meters on the hot and cold inlet pipes measure the amount of water being supplied to the tap and the resulting data is transmitted wirelessly to a receiver in the waste fitting itself.  This then displays the number of litres used.  The screen resets after each use and can be used with rechargeable batteries.  Simple to install, Drain News can also be fitted retrospectively.

Last but by no means least, Roca’s We Are Water Foundation has been set up by Roca to raise awareness of and mitigate the negative effects associated with the lack of adequate water resources.  The Foundation is working with NGOs such as Oxfam and Unicef to ensure the distribution of donations to cooperation projects across the globe.
