KBSA CEO Graham Ball reflects on the experience of attending the KBB exhibition which was held at The Excel Centre London in May. “After all the hype we attended KBB with a little apprehension, not certain what would happen – but we need not have worried! It was buzzing for all 3 days, and whilst the visitor mix was different each day, the show produced a real vibe for the industry.
Those exhibitors who made the investment all said that they obtained business and leads – justifying their decision to attend. We had many enquiries regarding retailer membership, with several coming from start-ups – which is an encouraging sign for the industry that usually relies on the ‘old guard’ for its future. Some corporates were targeted and we expect to have some more news on this front shortly.
The KBSA sponsored the Designer Award for Kitchens up to £25,000 at the KBB Review awards which were held during the exhibition – which was won by Janice Sutherland of Alfred Briggs (Alwood) Ltd of Lurgan. Congratulations to Janice for her success!
It proved to be a positive 3 days, and the atmosphere in the show was great to feel. We can but hope it spreads into the market with opportunities for us all in the coming months.
There are anecdotal signs that refurbishments are beginning to grow again, driven by householders who have decided not to move but to start the upgrading process. It is an opportunity for all KBB retailers to keep marketing activities targeted at loyal customer bases to ensure a position in the mix when projects are started.
Industry statistics show that new build starts for the 12 months to March 2011 are up 22% - so that’s 22% more kitchen, bathroom and bedroom opportunities in the market- let’s hope we all have the opportunity to make the most of them.”
