British design is iconic. Look back through history and you’ll see that many British designs are legendary worldwide; the Spitfire, the red telephone box, the Mini, Concorde, the Jaguar E Type, plus many, British furniture designs and lots more besides. As a nation we may not manufacture a great deal anymore, but rest assured that there are still some of us out there advocating traditional British cabinet making skills and offering apprenticeships to keep the practice alive; combining the best of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship to bring you superior quality furniture.
Whilst manufacturing processes evolve, designs and trends come and go and then come back again. We’re seeing this with coloured bathroom and kitchen furniture, for example, which has certainly taken off again. Not the colours of the 1970s, but colours for the current day.
More colours are entering today’s palette too. We’ve had strong blacks and aubergines, for example, and now we’re starting to see softer colours coming through; earthy, natural tones; perhaps in keeping with our desire to live more sustainably and respect resources. We certainly expect the trend for earthy tones to continue throughout the year.
There’ll always be a demand for natural wood finishes, whether high gloss or real wood. There’s just something about the beauty of the wood grain that we can’t get enough of.
In bathrooms, watch out for more modular designs coming through and more sleek designs. In kitchens we’ll see more handle-less ranges and a continued trend for curves and mixing unit sizes.
British design and manufacture has certainly come a long way and it’s a tradition that certainly continues to stand the test of time.
