Over the past 25 years there has been considerable infrastructure investment for leisure, sporting and recreational opportunities for adults yet, in the same period, the nation has spent far less on facilities and opportunities for young people. The result is that too many youngsters spend their leisure time on the streets or try to join the adult world of pubs and clubs long before they should.
On 23 June 2011, Smeg were proud to contribute to the fundraising endeavours of ‘On Side’ which was set up to respond to this shortfall through the provision of ‘Youth Zones’ in several UK towns and cities where disadvantaged and troubled youngsters can meet up, engage in various activities and hobbies, or simply have someone to talk to and be listened to.
The charity’s roots began with the Bolton Lads & Girls Club and, with the support of sponsors, has gone from strength to strength and is now well on the way to establishing a further five Youth Zones across the country.
John Roberts, CEO of DRL Limited, based in Bolton, is passionate about the aims of the charity in supporting young people, lobbying government and formed a brave team of climbers to make the taxing and often dangerous ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek was sponsored by Smeg and the project raised over £70,000.
Continuing their fundraising efforts, Smeg entered two teams in the Sir Steve Redgrave Golf Classic held in Wilmslow, Cheshire, one joined by Sir Steve himself. In addition, Smeg donated one of their new generation dishwashers for auction which attracted a bid for £650. The charity organisers were delighted to raise £23,000 from the event to add to their cause.
