So what is a ‘family bathroom’?
Published:  13 June, 2011

The term ‘family bathroom’ is used a lot nowadays.  We see it the papers, in the magazines and in those very slightly irritating yet entirely compulsive DIY programmes on the TV.  But what, exactly, is a ‘family bathroom.’

“The term is being used more and more” explains Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, “and it now seems to be the favourite tag for those bathrooms which are definitely not the ‘ensuite.’ Family bathrooms are designed for everyone in the home and not just for the inhabitants of the master bedroom.”

A good ‘family bathroom’ will be one designed with both the young and the elderly (and, of course, those in the middle) in mind.

It will be extremely practical to use with easy access to the main equipment of the WC, the washbasin, the bath and the shower.  It will have easy-to-use and clear controls on the taps and shower and it will be very safe, with TMV (Thermostatic Mixing Valves) to prevent dreadful scalding accidents. It will have loads of storage space ( some of it lockable) and excellent heating and lighting. Non-slip flooring is a definite bonus and for those who are unsteady on their feet it will have carefully positioned grabs rails.

The family bathroom will also be fun to use. On the one hand it will be the great escape and perfect private space for grown-ups but on the other it will be a superb area for the kids to learn some of the necessities of life.
