From over 3,000 entries, Andover kitchen fitter and joiner Chris Mayne has been named as a finalist in a national competition organised by trade retailer Screwfix – and is now battling it out with nine other finalists from across the country to take home the national title and a brand new van.
A 49-year-old joiner from Andover, Hampshire, Chris has more than 30 years experience in the business.
Chris puts his success down to his versatility and the fact that he always listens to his customers. What’s more, the ambitious worker spotted a gap in the market and has just started a garage conversion company to help those customers looking to expand.
Chris said:“My number one job is listening to the customer and asking lots of questions to find out what they need and then keep them up to date on their job every step of the way.
“With the property market as it is, people aren’t moving as much so being able to offer conversions is really working for my business.”
Chris, whose company is called C.A.M Carpentry, is now hoping to be crowned Britain’s Top Tradesman 2011 – and win a brand new van manufactured by Ford.
Chris added: “With so many entries to the competition, even making the final of Britain’s Top Tradesman is an honour. I’m just crossing my fingers that I impressed the judges!”

Chris and all our finalists have demonstrated their willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done and it’s certainly no easy task to pick the winner.”
Chris was invited to Silverstone racecourse to meet the judging panel at the finalists’ day and was treated to a tour of the iconic race track.
The judging panel, which includes representatives from Screwfix, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and the electrical trade body NICEIC will be announcing the national winner later in June.
