Even during a recession, Italian design catches the eye of the British market

Starting a new bathroom business in 2008 at the start of a recession might have seemed risky to the faint hearted, but the Italian sanitaryware manufacturer Galassia had the foresight to see that there was a market in the UK and Ireland for bathroom products with the Italian flair for design that stand out from the mainstream.

Although the recession has bitten hard and still has some time to go before total confidence returns, we have found a demand in the marketplace for designs that are eye catching, as long as they are well made and at a reasonable price.

It would seem to be the extremes of the market that have been most affected in the current financial climate. On the one hand the companies who rely upon ultra high margins as the badge of their exclusivity and on the other, suppliers who must achieve high volume to break even.

Those who have trodden the middle path, combining quality and design with decent margins for their stockists have built up loyal partnerships with showrooms that continue to pay good dividends, not only for their stockists and installers, but also down to homeowners who are happy with their purchases and who are likely to recommend them to others.

Our market is all about confidence and this kind of partnership engenders that. Once our country is back on something like an even keel, business levels will pick up, but there is still a place today for interesting products at good value for money.
