Entries have been flooding in from Rotherham’s tradesmen for the chance to be named Britain’s Top Tradesman – with an incredible prize available for the lucky winner.
From the entries received so far, there have been some heroic acts and gestures. Some have battled through snow and ice to get the job done, while others help elderly customers to get essential repairs done for free. Many have diversified their businesses to make it through the recession – and all are keen to get their hands on the Top Tradesman title.
One Rotherham tradesman who has been quick off the mark to get his entry in is kitchen and shop fitter Chris Smith.
Chris, from Louden Road, Scholes in Rotherham, is a self employed kitchen and shop fitter who works around the country, often in some unusual locations. However he found one with a difference when he was asked to fit a new control room at the Bank of England. At one point, Chris was working in a room filled with cages of £20 notes, to the value of £5 million.
Chris Comments: “It was an extraordinary location to be working in; money is printed there 24 hours a day so of course security was very high with security guards everywhere. One day I was shown inside a safe containing 5 million pounds which was a bit mind-blowing!
“The control room I was fitting had to be armour plated so was a lot of hard work but it was such an amazing opportunity. I can’t complain at all. It’s definitely a place I don’t think many people can say they’ve seen.”
Chris shows a real passion for his trade and strives to create a strong working relationship with his customers, believing that getting to know each individual customer and gaining an understanding of their needs is at the heart of great customer service.
Chris Comments: “I’m very fortunate that I haven’t needed to advertise for 15 years. All of my business is generated through word of mouth which is very important. I struggled at first when the recession hit but I pulled through and now business is on the rise, I’m feeling much more positive about the future.”
Chris is now hoping to be in the running to be crowned Britain’s Top Tradesman 2011 – and win a van of his choice, manufactured by Ford, up to the value of £27,000.
John Mewett, Marketing Director at Screwfix, said: “We’ve had some really great entrants who exemplify what we are looking for in a top tradesman, and Chris is a great example of that.”
