Best use of tile in a private house
Published:  12 April, 2011

At the 2011 TTA Award ceremony BKU Magazine presented the award for Best use of tile in a private house to Natural Stone Emporium Ltd for work at Hanson Hall, Cheshire.

Hanson Hall is owned by one of Natural Stone Emporium’s private clients. A stunning property, partly listed, it has significant historical importance, with the original section of the house dating back to 1400. The owner has sympathetically restored the property, but has been keen to give it a contemporary, stylish feel that enhances the original structure.

The Natural Stone Emporium based in Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire’s High Peak, has worked on the project for approximately the last two years and has supplied and fitted the majority of the stone throughout the house and in the five bathrooms, two kitchens and in the housekeeper’s flat. The stone creates a key design statement throughout the home and is featured in some way in almost every room.

A variety of stunning, natural stone materials have been selected for the property including:

  • Jerusalem tumbled limestone extensively used throughout the downstairs area, approx 130 sq metres.
  • Arabasato Italian marble in bathrooms that had to be matched up perfectly.
  • Emperador dark polished marble in bathrooms and in the spa area.
  • Light emperador marble in the pool area and bathrooms with a honed, antique finish, fitted with accurate levels to drain water away.
  • Crema beige, honed marble in bathrooms.
  • Cosmos granite on work surfaces.
  • Split face limestone on a feature wall in the pool area in small 200 x 50 mil sheets

Attention to detail and high quality craftsmanship have been key requirements on this project – the house has a value of approx £10million – so the quality of the stone supplied and fitted had to exceptional.

Technical expertise was an obvious requirement on the project, marble was cut to fall in several bathrooms and there were numerous mitred cuts. In addition tiles had be bespoke and cut on site on several occasions.
