The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) has issued a Policy Position Statement supporting the use of food waste disposers (FWD) in the management of food waste from domestic kitchens.
In an update to its policy position, the CIWEM has highlighted the fact that in-sink FWDs are an environmentally acceptable option for separating food waste at source and conveying it to treatment and use via existing infrastructures.
Ashley Munden, sales and marketing director for leading food waste disposal manufacturer InSinkErator comments: “We are extremely encouraged that the CIWEM’s assessment supports the use of food waste disposers and is a fantastic move for our category.
“Almost a quarter (22%) of all rubbish thrown away is food waste so the adoption of FWDs can help to be a step towards reducing the amount of biodegradable waste disposed in landfill, thereby meeting the directives set out in the EU Landfill Directive.”
