How serious are we really about energy and water saving? Whilst there is certainly a committed nucleus of consumers who act on their environmental concerns, I would suggest that the CO2 and energy saving reduction has really only been successful because of the legislation which therefore gives people no option.
This legislation does not yet exist for water saving and I believe until it does, no real advances will be made in introducing water saving measures domestically.
Of course the Code for Sustainable Homes imposes energy and water saving conditions for new build but this does not get to the root of the problem i.e. in particular, the millions of WC’s still flushing on 9 or even 12 litres of potable water in existing homes.
If water metering becomes compulsory, then the consumer will be in a position to know how much the household spends on water and would then be more likely to reduce wastage with saving money being the incentive.
Manufacturers have had water saving WC’s and other products for some years - we are ready but there is no real incentive for the consumer and therefore there are poor take up levels.
