There is a growing trend to add vibrancy and colour to a room

When current news stories and prevailing conditions for most consumers is dull and bleak it becomes more and more relevant to add some colour in the living environments we inhabit every day.

Although the majority of kitchens and bathrooms remain predominantly white or cream, there is a growing trend to add vibrancy and interest with the inclusion of accent coloured doors that brighten and enhance the room instantly.

With the rise in popularity of open plan design, the kitchen is fast becoming recognised as ‘the heart of the home’ and the lines between our living spaces and working spaces are becoming more indistinct. The result is that in most of today’s homes, living room colours are being reflected in our kitchens in a manner to carry colour themes throughout the living and working space.

Two real trends are developing around the inclusion of colour today, and while both are very different they each have relevance in developing kitchen and bathroom design.

‘Hot’ colours in reds, oranges, yellows, lime greens, electric blues, pinks and purples are generally used on feature doors and as bright accents to add the interest to white and cream. These work well but tend to be used where a modern contemporary look is called for and where a bold statement can be made about lifestyle choices in modern kitchen design.

More subtle use of colour is now coming to the fore and offering an alternative with the emergence of a softer ‘painted’ look in warmer tones of greys, soft greens, browns and purples that can be featured in both traditional and contemporary kitchens depending on how the kitchen is accessorised. This colour palette corresponds to the current trends in paint and wall covering colours and tones featured widely in design and living publications today.

Whatever the age group, whatever the desired effect, whatever the kitchen style or lifestyle choice, todays kitchen and bathroom manufacturers are holding their own in the field of design and offering up to the minute colour choices to suit todays demanding consumer.
