Insurance claims
Published:  18 November, 2010

Retailers have always had a few clients who are putting in insurance claims or repairing their homes once a claim is accepted but this is certainly on the increase. The majority of cases are flood, fire or break-ins with flooding the fastest growing and on the minds of many clients who will never actually be affected by it. In all three cases tiled walls and floors can help minimise the impact.

If a home is at risk of flood damage, then tiling floors will enable the family to get the house back to normal much more quickly. When there is warning of rising flood levels just roll up the rugs and move everything to a higher level. If any water does get in it can just be mopped away. Some house insurers insist on replacing existing floor coverings with tile when compensating for flood damage.

You can actually make the floor completely waterproof so the water doesn’t seep into cellars or foundations. Waterproofing (tanking) systems can be used in areas that may suffer water ingress such as hallways or for the whole of the ground floor.

One of the side effects of a domestic fire is the damage that the water used to put the fire out causes so the same applies as for flood; wall and floor tiles will minimise the impact. Of course being fired at such high temperatures tiles are inflammable and many will come through a small domestic fire unscathed.

Break-ins and robberies are heart-breaking and little can be done to minimise the effect on a household but at least with wall and floor tiles the graffiti and dirt that often accompany such an incident can be wiped away.
