The trend to minimalism
Published:  08 October, 2010

Minimalism in the bathroom is just one of the current trends and it can be seen nowhere better than in the most recent designs of shower trays and enclosures.

Several manufacturers, members of the BMA, now have very-low-height trays in their portfolios.

These have been designed to give the ‘feel’ of a wet room without the requirement for the installation of tanking systems and below-floor waste channels. The latest products have the minimal profile of just 40mm and to quickly clear the waste water the so called ‘vortex waste’ literally sucks water out of the tray and through the trap, so the tray doesn't flood even with the most powerful shower.

Some manufacturers have gone further still with the introduction of special coated surfaces which it is claimed, reduce bacteria and mould growth. Since the coating is ‘built in’ it won’t wear off or wash away.

Shower enclosures have also been subject to the designer’s eye. Frameless enclosures were, at one time, regarded as an upmarket luxury product. Today frameless is affordable. Clever and careful engineering has ensured that the thick toughened and reinforced glass panels require minimal framing support. Simple but strong wall bracing in elegant chrome plated designs ensure that the look is literally see-through and the trend has caught on.

“Shower tray and enclosure design is reaching its pinnacle” comments Yvonne Orgill, CEO of the BMA. “The gorgeous contemporary designs now available are stylish and safe and spot on for today’s on-trend bathroom.”
