Don’t forget the Kitchen sink
Sales Guide by DAVE MAYER Sales and Marketing Director, Reginox UK
Published:  02 September, 2010

Following the economic downturn and the associated slow down in R&D investment, the sink and tap market is starting to show signs of recovery and design flair and innovation are back on the up.

In the past, the kitchen sink was often one of the ‘forgotten’ items within the kitchen, always playing second fiddle to the units, doors, appliances and worktops – a necessity rather than a contributory factor to the overall appearance and performance of one of the most important rooms in the home. Nowadays, however, there is much greater emphasis on the sink as a usable commodity that doubles up as a workstation and wet area, with the taps a ‘three dimensional’ fashion statement that can truly complement both the sink and the entire kitchen.

So for the retailer it is really important to embrace the recent developments we are seeing in sink and tap design. The use of curves alongside angular lines has added new options to designers and the increase in glass and steel as a combination can be extremely eye catching. Whilst some customers will want little more than the traditional single or 1.5 bowl design, others will be impressed by the more interesting options available, and opportunities for the retailer to really sell the sink area as ‘added value’ to the kitchen’s style and functionality have never been greater.

The sink should be a key talking point, rather than an afterthought, and retailers should make the most of any chance to wax lyrical about designs that dovetail with the design of the doors or the shape of the cooker hood, as well as encouraging consumers to purchase accessories that are actually useful, and taps that look great at the same time as providing instant filtered water.

The days of the sink and tap being the add-on item are over and the future is about positioning them as key contributors towards the kitchen’s overall wow factor.
