The concept of the Wet Room has seen a steady growth in popularity and is having a major impact on bathroom layout and design.
“In the long history of domestic bathroom development the wet room is relatively recent but the idea is now fully fledged,” comments Chris Taylor-Hamlin, Technical Director of the BMA. “A number of our members have designed ‘tanking systems’ which create that fully water tight bathroom.”
Wet rooms are at the leading edge of stylish bathroom design. They give a feeling of airy spaciousness and minimalism and make the best use of the room. They are also about ‘making life easy’ for everyone. They are particularly useful where level entry to the shower area is essential - for instance, for use by someone in a wheel chair as without any steps there are fewer chances of slips and trips. Cleaning, too, is so much easier and hygiene levels are excellent.
Careful planning is a key element in any new wet room installation. The positioning of all water and power services should be considered well before the tanking process commences since, once the area is sealed, it should not be punctured or pierced. Tiling or wet wall installation follows and the whole process can be quite detailed. Allowance for the room to be completely out of use for several days should be made and the consumer should be made aware of this at the quotation stages.
