Design drives the latest trends in the extractor hood market
Published:  31 July, 2010

The kitchen is still considered the heart of the home. The look and feel of this space, however, is ever evolving; modern trends are dictating dramatic developments in all kitchen appliances, particularly the extractor hood.

The humble hood, once lacklustre enough to be hidden behind cupboards and noisy enough to be switched off, is now far more aspirational. Discerning consumers choose the hood as the central statement piece and design the kitchen around it – such is the trend in design.

An extractor hood no longer looks like an extractor hood. The ‘lamp’ styles are clearly inspired by other cutting-edge house wares. Others feature minimalist clean lines, hidden filters and use non-traditional, sleek-looking materials such as black or mirror glass and glossy stainless steel.

Technology however, has not been ignored. Lorenzo Lispi, a pioneer in Italian hood design, states: “Consumer demand is central to good design which in turn becomes the driving force of the entire development process. Technology evolves to meet the demands of the design, complementing it rather than being the dominating factor, but the performance benefits must be obvious to the consumer. These days, technology should be maximising the benefits of filtering, noise reduction, energy saving and ergonomics.”

Albeit, that the more traditional designs such as the chimney, brick and curved glass styles are still very popular, an increase in the average price shows a trend towards the more premium end. The consumer, however, is not foolhardy and despite aspirations, still demands value for money. Successful hood ranges, are those that offer choice across the price spectrum, unique design with top performance, all at competitive prices.
