Contempora concept from Aster
Available in the UK through In-House Inspired Room Design
Published:  15 July, 2010

The Contempora concept from Aster moves kitchens away from a purely functional space into a highly aesthetic environment, transforming practical units into beautiful items of furniture. The concept is based on a moving design where the kitchen can be totally hidden from view within sliding or closing furniture. This provides flexibility of space so that a living, cooking, dining area can be transformed according to specific requirements.

Contempora features clean and crisp architectural lines creating a kitchen style perfect for urban and contemporary interiors. It is an original concept that appeals to the trend for open plan living and is available through In-House Inspired Room Design.

There are four main Contempora systems:

1) Sliding systems

The Aster Contempora sliding system features innovative technology where the tall doors fold on each other. A light magnetic system keeps the doors together so they can all slide across making kitchen storage and appliances easily accessible. It is available in modules of 1200mm.

2) An island unit that slides to the side.

Contempora features a substantial island unit. Hidden inside the island is a ceramic or induction hob plus a sink that has a retracting tap. The top of the island slides effortlessly to the side immediately creating a breakfast bar where Aster’s bar stools can be pulled up for dining. After eating, the kitchen elements can be hidden away transforming the space back into a living area.

Another option is that the island unit can house a retracting table that can be pulled open to create a dining area.

3) Island unit with top that moves forwards and backwards

This Contempora solution is perfect where space is more limited. The island unit features a top that can be pushed backwards to create a breakfast bar while revealing a hidden hob and sink withretracting tap.

The tall units behind feature a handless system where the units open revealing hidden fridges and cabinets. The unit fronts are shown here in Orange with contrasting black grips. These can either be in coordinating or contrasting colours.

4) Lift up system

This Contempora system has been created so that when the kitchen elements are closed, the furniture resembles a buffet with a beautiful veneered top. Open up the lid and revealed inside are the sink, extractor, hob and cooking area all set into a polished stainless steel worktop and back which acts as a mirror.

The lift-up system is assisted by state-of-the-art hydraulic systems so it can be effortlessly raised and lowered, even when in a long run.

The Contempora concept is available in 50 matt and gloss lacquers including 10 metallic colours and special finishes in Gold Leaf and Silver Leaf. Custom colours are available to match specific customer requirements. Aster’s Contempora concept features veneers that match across different units as they have been selected from a single piece of wood. These can run both

vertically and horizontally which is only possible as Aster brings traditional craftsman’s knowledge and expertise of hand-selecting and matching veneers to create contemporary and beautifully finished furniture.

Contempora with a sliding system has a retail starting price from £18,000.
