British Ceramic Tile at forefront of exciting ceramic tile trends
Published:  07 July, 2010

Trends in ceramic tiles are driven by two main factors - home fashion and technical advancements which increase the scope of what’s possible in special effects. Recently we’ve seen metallic glazes, raised prints, sparkle effects - all of which play with surface reflection, giving shimmering finishes which seem to change under different lighting conditions.

Fashion often dictates the way in which tiles are used; currently vertical features and panels are replacing the traditional horizontal border. Full tile decors are used to striking effect and mosaics are a popular decorative feature, often within a panel or defined area such as a shower cubicle.

Whites are a popular option as they can be accessorised by accents in any choice of colour. New effects include textured tiles with combinations of prints, offering Damasks, printed mosaics and other interesting optical effects.

By adding a metallic feature tile it’s possible to achieve a much more contemporary effect while remaining in a neutral palette - or add a bright colour for a livelier look.

For kitchens, brick shapes are replacing 10x10s which have dominated this market for so long; small rustic bricks will give a country look while longer elongated pieces work well in a modern setting. Larger tiles can be effective set horizontally using a brick bond layout.

New colours coming into the frame follow on from recent home fashion trends including sophisticated neutrals, soft grey, mushroom and truffle colours.

Digital printing can closely mimic any natural stone and be applied to structured surfaces. Marbles and stone effects are long-term classics, although even these have their trends. Currently there is a move towards lighter marbles including Cappuccino, Calacatta and Travertine; black and white Carrara are always popular.
