    Travertine, although often sold as a marble, is technically a limestone and is characterised by the presence of voids within the matrix which can vary hugely, both in the quantity in which they occur and in the form that they take. Traditionally travertine has been used to clad walls and within the marble trade has been considered a difficult material for flooring as the weakness that results from the voids can cause problems.
