Floods bring no relief for water efficiency
Published:  01 September, 2007

This summers floods

The recent floods have not brought any relief for water efficiency. Instead, they have only highlighted the fragility of our water supplies and even brought a halt to supply of clean drinking water in some areas.

This abundance of rain does not mean we can switch off from water efficiency, in fact quite the opposite. This devastating situation means we have to do even more to protect our resource, including learning how to stamp out wasteful practices and passing this information on to consumers.

The key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use and that is the overall message of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme.

Manufacturers are producing more water efficient products than ever before and the BMA Scheme will make identification of these products easy, for both domestic and commercial markets.

The Scheme is open to all companies of bathroom products within the United Kingdom who can demonstrate, if necessary via a third party, that their product meets the criteria as defined by Industry technical experts.

The Scheme website is available at www.water-efficiencylabel.org.uk and offers a whole host of information about the Scheme and the reasons for implementation, aims and objectives, how products qualify, definitions of eligible products, criteria, rules, regulations, general water saving tips and a database of qualifying products.

This autumn, as consumers notice the label on bathroom products they will be looking to retailers, merchants and installers for advice and guidance. You are strongly urged to study the Scheme website and get up to speed to ensure you are passing on the correct information.
