Space saving fundamental to kitchen design

The internal design of kitchen cabinets has come to the fore from the perspectives of all concerned – designers, manufacturers, retailers and end users. The intelligent use of internal cabinet space is an area where leading fittings manufacturers have specialised for a number of years and over time have developed products, systems and concepts to achieve optimum space usage in kitchens. Good product development should be based on wide ranging, international and scientifically independent research.

One of the defining principles of space saving is for the user to have total access (and vision) to the entire interior of the cabinets. In base units this means that fixed shelves are most definitely a thing of the past. Total access means full extension drawers and pullouts so that items at the very rear can be retrieved and replaced without moving anything else.

Flexible internal organisation and dividing systems are also crucial. They should allow users to flexibly configure the internal organisation to suit their own domestic routines. Dedicated units such as the full access to corner units is a major space saving area and the use of otherwise “dead” areas like under the sink, and behind the plinth, should be exploited. All of these components and systems must operate perfectly for the life of the kitchen so motion is also fundamental to satisfactory operation – smooth and effortless opening and closing of even the most heavily laden drawers and integrated soft close. Effortless opening and controlled soft closing of overhead lift systems and optimum hinging angles for doors are other essentials.

By planning a kitchen interior carefully and intelligently up to 55 per cent of additional space can be exploited over a conventionally fitted kitchen.
