KBSA members remain busy and in optimistic mood

It has been a year of mixed fortunes within the kitchen industry, some retailers have found the trading conditions tough while KBSA members remain busy and their mood optimistic.

As ever retailers are coping with more legislation, last year it was Part P this year we have had to get to grips with the WEEE legislation for the disposal of electronic and electrical equipment.

Retailers have finally had to determine how they are going to deal with the new DTI compliance scheme and make sense of the disjointed information that has been available.

Whilst this will be seen as more red tape by some it is an issue that falls under the “environmentally friendly” banner and the trend for a more eco-conscious business will have a significant impact on the kitchen industry. Consumers are now looking for retailers who offer both environmentally friendly design advice and eco-friendly products for their new kitchen.

Some manufacturers have been accused of jumping on the bandwagon and providing pure lip service by re-badging existing products as environmentally friendly but we have also seen many innovative and worthwhile products coming onto the market.

For designers the challenge is to meet the customers’ expectations and provide a design that takes on board environmental issues. Typically they will be looking for designs that incorporate the easy division and recycling of waste, energy efficient lighting and timber from sustainable sources. Customer demands remain high across all aspects of the business, particularly for service levels.

We are also seeing consumers demanding more reassurances that they are dealing with a reputable retailer and that their money is protected. Rogue traders and companies going bankrupt are still associated with some sections of the home improvement industry. Retailers are addressing this by offering more comprehensive insurance packages.

The KBSA has introduced a cover that goes beyond the deposit protection previously available. This scheme, called ConsumerCare Plus, covers the deposit, work in progress and non-completion, plus a six year warranty. This has already proved extremely popular with the ever more astute consumer as it gives them more confidence in the company they are dealing with and the certain knowledge that their money is protected.

Consumers continue to demand the very best in design, functionality and service from the kitchen industry. The industry has responded well and consumers have access to some of the best designs in Europe. Innovation is strong with new products and design solutions responding to market trends. The high gloss contemporary and stylish look remains a favourite with consumers and the trend for more spacious kitchens continues.

We are also seeing new materials being used for worktops and splashbacks such as limestone and glass. Technology and design innovation allows these materials to be incorporated into modern kitchens producing an often dramatic effect.

If we are to maintain levels of excellence in all areas then training is vital and I am delighted that the KBB NTG is now well established to set the best standards, improve the skills of the workforce, address skills shortages and develop talent for the future.

These high standards will enable consumers to immediately identify reputable retailers as well as ensure continued growth for those suppliers and manufacturers that strive for the very best in all areas of their business.
