We start this year feeling optimistic with house prices continuing to slowly rise in the last six consecutive months and there are signs of market improvements which everyone in the bathroom business is eagerly looking forward to. During 2009 one very apparent effect of the credit crunch has been that retailers and merchants have reduced stockholding to the bare minimum to save on outgoings and improve cashflow.
Which is where the distributor comes in. A distributor with a large stock holding, in effect, can be as good as the merchant’s or retailer’s own warehouse. It is all down to service - a much used word but one which underlies a whole concept, which the distributor has to live and breathe to meet the customers’ needs.
Service means reliable next day deliveries, large stockholding, an efficient sales office, field sales advice and support, marketing initiatives and promotions, competitive prices, display ideas etc.. That is service from the distributor to the showroom. And to retain the sales opportunity, the retailer, in turn, has to provide the very best service to their customer which they can only do if they get the service they need from their distributor.
And to add to the difficulties, manufacturers have also reduced production capacity which makes the distributors role as a stockholder even more critical.
