Effective extraction is kitchen essential
Comment by IAN KERSHAW, Managing Director, CDA
Published:  21 January, 2010

“An effective extractor is an absolute must in any kitchen,” says Ian Kershaw, MD of fast growing appliance manufacturer CDA. “ Without a good extractor the kitchen will quickly become dirty because grease contained in steam from frying and other cooking will deposit itself on surfaces such as cornice rails, door edges and the ceiling. Smells will linger too - and a good extractor will remove them quickly and efficiently.”

“A stylish extractor is also an important part of kitchen design, providing a focal point above the hob. Powerful down lights provide good, clear illumination for the cook and can be a part of the ambient lighting scheme in the kitchen. Extractors represent a very good add on sale for retailers and the sheer choice of models and sizes in today’s market mean there really is something to suit every kitchen. I would really urge retailers to take extraction seriously. Learn how to work out the right size of extractor for the room - it is a really easy thing to do and does not need specialist knowledge. Point out to the customer the difference between a ducted model and one where the extracted air is re-circulated. Features such as washable grease filters, Clean Air function and peripheral aspiration should also be explained. Peripheral aspiration is something that is fairly new to the market but it does provide really effective extraction because steam and odours are picked up by the entire surface of the extractor rather than the just the central area. Put simply it means that nothing can escape round the edges !”

“Stainless steel and glass chimney styles are currently the most popular choice in extractors and will suit most kitchens. More unusual cylinders are also proving popular, particularly for islands. The older style extractor integrated into a pull out door front or a chimney piece isn’t talked about so much now but is still a useful workhorse and available for refurbishment projects or where the customer wants extraction concealed within furniture. I believe that in the future we will see even more exciting and unusual designs coming on to the market.
