Short term gain versus long term performance

Many of you might agree that industry-wide recognised standards that categorise product conformity under BS EN classifications, should be considered when pricing materials for a project. However, more often than not this seems to be overshadowed by other factors such as price, promotion or even marketing statements that have no classification to support them.

Recent times have seen price wars prevail more than ever, fuelled by the difficult economic climate and an influx of manufacturers. With recovery hopefully on the horizon, perhaps the following question should be asked: is choosing short-term gain the best course of action? I.e. price over performance.

To always opt for the lowest priced materials will have little or no benefit in the long-term. Overheads can surely only be reduced by so much before formulations will have been compromised too. Considering the industry’s future as a whole, this may hinder the overall development of materials and consequently the utilisation of new technologies.

Reducing time wasting and often expensive complications (which can lead to failed tiling installations) by choosing a material due to its proven technical capabilities, will dramatically help to secure a fruitful future for individual companies and consequently the industry.

Manufacturers are available to help and advise, so always seek appropriate guidance. Repercussions through incorrectly chosen materials can be avoided; technical capabilities should be of paramount importance.
