Laminate worktops continue to be number one

Laminate continues to be one of the most popular surface materials for kitchen worktops throughout Europe, with almost 85 per cent of UK households having laminate worktops installed as a first choice.

The way the market has developed over the last few years has projected laminate back into the minds of designers and consumers alike. Improved performance and more realistic designs have contributed to a new upsurge in laminate popularity.

The kitchen worktop market follows two distinctive paths; firstly new build, primarily related to housing starts and secondly refurbishment, serviced through kitchen retailers and DIY outlets. Whereas many years ago there was a clear differential in the buying demands of each category today’s requirement is moving towards reducing the gap.

Part of the reason lies in the technological improvements of the surface, combining developments within the laminate industry with new, modern printing techniques. Woods and stone effects have taken on a more distinctive and honest appearance, closely replicating the look and feel of the natural material.

Metal effects are now more extravagant and add something different to the design of the kitchen. The low reflective ultra matt texture typically adds to the richness of classic woods whilst a high gloss finish replicates the look of polished stone.

In addition the overall technical performance of laminate has been further enhanced to provide a more resistant and harder wearing surface than before.

And the future … laminate technology will continue to push the boundaries even further. New, innovative and exciting textures combined with even better, quality reproductions will help preserve laminate worktops as the most popular first choice throughout the UK.
