Improvements to Water Efficient Bathroom Product Labelling Scheme to be announced
Published:  03 September, 2009

Water efficiency is in the spotlight nowadays and the use of water in our bathrooms has come under increasing scrutiny by our legislators. And rightly so. The Code for Sustainable Homes and Building Regulations Part G were recently revised and the decade-old Water Regulations are now under review.

Members of the BMA have responded positively and quickly to the revisions and excellent new water saving bathroom products have come to market in recent months. Ultra low flush WCs, low volume baths, and low volume showers and handsets have been launched. Additionally ‘grey water' recycling products are gaining popularity and are being incorporated into new buildings.

In anticipation of these developments the BMA launched its unique, web-based, Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) in 2007. The scheme quickly became established and is now recognised throughout the industry and by government as the most useful guide to the very best in water efficient products.

But the BMA doesn't like to sit on its laurels and from the 1st September 2009 major changes to the scheme will be announced. It will even easier to understand by both professionals and consumers alike. It will have a completely redesigned and intuitive label layout and will include two new product categories, grey water recycling units and shower handsets. The scheme is set to expand with many more products being listed.

Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the BMA, commented "for both householders and bathroom designers, WEPLS is set to reinforce its position as the main source of water saving product information."
