Large format tiles in internal tiling
Published:  04 August, 2009

A Technical Working Group of The Tile Association in co-operation with Ceram has prepared a technical document, "Large Format Tiles in Internal Tiling". Every TTA member will receive one free copy. Members and non members can order additional copies by downloading the order form from TTA website at www.tiles.org.uk.

The paper has been written with the aim of providing advice for all parties in the process of supplying or installing large format wall and floor tiles.

Because of modern manufacturing techniques, ceramic tiles can be manufactured in sizes previously only used in the stone and marble sector. Ceramic tile sizes can be manufactured with dimensions of length and width greater than 1 metre. Large format tiles are now readily available on the market and special consideration should be given to fixing these tiles.

The document includes the Health and Safety considerations during installation and in use of the weight of the product. It addresses design considerations for wall tiling including the maximum weight of tiling for specific substrates and maximum fixing heights.

For both wall and floor tiling the documents advises on setting out, minimising cutting, cutting, background preparation, tolerances and flatness and minimum joint widths. It also covers bedding material, selecting the correct adhesive and the choice of grout.

This document makes reference to British Standards: BS5385:1 for internal wall tiling and BS5385:3 for floor tiling. With the increased prevalence of large format tiles in today's market this is essential reading for anyone supplying, fixing or specifying tiles with at least one edge greater than 600mm (nominal) or a facial area greater than 3500cm2.

For extra copies of the document TTA members will be charged £25.00 or £50.00+VAT in PDF format for multiple use. Non members will pay £125.00 and £125.00 +VAT. Architects and specifiers are charged at the members' rate.
