The significance of colour

It's estimated that the average consumer expects a ten year lifespan out of his kitchen, so the choice of colour is very central to the whole decision-making process. Undoubtedly the most popular kitchen furniture colour is white. It's the colour that never goes out of fashion because we furniture manufacturers simply don't let it. It has tireless and timeless appeal with the consumer and so we breathe new life into it every year with a slightly different tonal shade, a new surface texture (this year its soft matt like baby's skin) and new door styles. It reigns as the colour of choice for the designer, contemporary look.

Other colour trends are also evident. There continues a strong trend for natural tones of beige, greige, taupes and now organic green and greys. All of these colours exhibit the timeless qualities so beloved of white, while presenting a softer, easy-living side that also chimes well with the zeitgeist for caring about the environment and feeling grounded.

But perhaps the most topical is the counter trend for glamour and luxuriousness which is definitely emerging. This is typified by a richness of materials and colours in the form of dark woodgrains, shiny metal finishes and strong paints or wallpapers. It's a definite ‘designed' look and signals a refreshing departure, however long it lasts, from the uniformity of monochrome colours. Woodgrains on kitchen furniture always provide the consumer with a potent psychological mix of fashion, warmth, craftsmanship and timelessness. And in these unsteady times that can also give a sense of security.
