Blum UK MD, Michael Powell says that proper storage and carefully engineered motion is the key to a successful modern kitchen.
Kitchen styles vary widely - from high gloss contemporary styles to character oak rustic doors and everything in between. It's all a matter of personal choice. What isn't acceptable in a modern kitchen is poor design attention to maximising the use of the volume of space inside the cabinets. It is both surprising and disappointing to still come across manufacturers at all levels who turn out a fabulous looking product which, once installed, fails to deliver proper usage through lack of attention to detail and, in some cases, cutting costs.
One of the cardinal design sins is the use of old fashioned fixed shelves in base units which offer poor ergonomic and visual access to the contents stored. It is vital that base units should be fitted with full extension drawers and pull-outs so that the contents are made accessible instantly to the user - even if stored at the back. Awkward and special units are often by-passed by designers and manufacturers as being too difficult to fit out. This is wrong. Units like corner units offer large volumes of storage space but they have to be fitted in a way that makes the contents totally and instantly accessible. And in the drawers and pull-outs, the actual division and organisation of storage must use flexible, practical systems that optimise the use of the space and make kitchen use easy and a pleasure.
