Greater functionality is the way forward for taps

A discernible trend in the tap market is towards offering greater functionality. The consumer has been exposed to the benefits of the filtration tap and also pull-out sprays for long enough now to expect a far wider choice of styles that perform these functions and this informed the new tap designs that we are introducing in 2009.

Research among retailers shows that they have a clutch of favourite tap styles which they tend to specify in an 80/20 rule kind of way. These are the taps that combine good quality, value for money with design looks that have a universal appeal and will offer longevity. The swan neck spout with simple levers is a classic favourite for this, easily straddling the design boundary between traditional and modern. New tap styles emerging continue this winning design formula, while also incorporating slim pull-outs that are elegant and almost inconspicuous. There is no compromise on the functionality, just a more sophisticated way of offering it. This wider choice of styles is a win-win situation for retailers and consumers.

Filtration taps offer a great deal of market growth potential as consumers increasingly switch on to their excellent benefits. A wider choice of styles is emerging here too, along with different price points that more modest purses can afford. Recognising the growing sophistication required for this market, we will shortly begin offering a choice of filter cartridges to consumers, including one specifically for hard water areas where limescale build up is a problem. It wouldn't surprise me at all if filtration becomes a standard feature on the majority of taps in the future, in much the same way as air conditioning is no longer an expensive luxury in cars.
