Creating an illusion with space-saving furniture for the smallest room

Whilst we would all love the luxury of a large bathroom complete with plenty of storage, freestanding bath and separate shower, the reality is that the average British bathroom is often no bigger than a double bed!

This is especially relevant in newer homes where government regulations have allowed developers to build a higher density of properties on sites thus reducing the overall square footage of the house - with the bathroom being one of the rooms where space is squeezed the most. There is also a growing need for bathroom products which are suitable for cloakrooms, with government regulations stating that all new homes must have a ground floor WC.

This presents suppliers and retailers with great opportunities to expand their offer of space saving bathroom products.

Traditionally space saving bathroom furniture products have centred on reduced depth furniture, typically offered at a depth of 200mm alongside a standard depth of 300mm. However the recent trend for modular bathroom furniture has also increased the range of space friendly products manufacturers can offer. In terms of sanitaryware the trend towards wall hung toilets not only gives a bathroom a contemporary finish but is also a great space saving device, as are corner basins and ‘P' shaped shower baths.

Planning a smaller space also presents an opportunity for designers and planners to get creative - why not consider recessing units into the wall to save space? The use of colour and light should also be an important consideration when planning a smaller bathroom - recent European trends for high gloss all white finishes are a perfect choice for smaller spaces because the light reflecting properties will make a room appear larger.
