It would be ridiculous to start talking about ‘green shoots of recovery' since, as we know, the UK is well into its recession and it will be some time before we climb out of it. But it is a fact that over recent weeks some members of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, particularly those in the consumer RMI sector, have reported some increase in commercial activity. Other members, those exhibiting at the recent ECObuild in London, say that they have had a "great show."
"This is exactly the news we are looking for" says Yvonne Orgill, chief executive of the BMA. "An upturn in trade, no matter how small, may give us all hope that we have reached the bottom of the trough."
The recent ‘quantitative easing' and another reduction in interest rate recently announced by the Bank of England, together with announcements of more credit availability from such lenders as Northern Rock will go some way to helping the bathroom industry. The reduction in VAT has also helped the sales of ‘big ticket' bathroom products.
We know that householders are not moving but home improvements and DIY could be the first to benefit from any upturn in the economy, however slight.
Perhaps now is the best time ever to refurbish and buy a sparkling new BMA Bathroom and retailers need to be thinking how they may best capitalise on a developing optimism. Getting would-be bathroom buyers into their showrooms is the key. Attractive advertising, fabulous window displays and keen pricing will all help towards improving footfall - getting consumers out shopping again is what we are all looking for.
