Cooking appliances are still a fundamental need in a challenging market

Although the cooking market is facing a challenging time with the current slump in the housing market and consumers who are shying away from spending on big ticket items, cooking remains the primary function of a kitchen - making cooking appliances a fundamental part of the room.

Retailers and manufacturers have been working hard to present products that have the right combination of features and design to entice people to upgrade their kitchens, recognising the lifestyle trends that drive consumers to invest in their homes.  More than ever before, simple, practical solutions are being sought to help meet the modern pressures and time constraints of every day life.

A number of key trends continue to exist within the cooking market.  The gap between the freestanding and built-in sector continues to shrink.  Built-in models are increasing market share mainly due to the number of new brands and product styles available, and consumers have more choice than ever when it comes to building or re-furbishing fitted kitchens.

Although stainless steel remains very popular with consumers wanting to recreate the stylish professional looks they see in lifestyle magazines and on television, we are definitely seeing the UK consumer starting to get more adventurous.  However, trends like this are often short lived because for most, new appliances represent a considerable investment and not one they want to repeat a few months down the line as ‘the hot season's colour' is no longer en-vogue. During these uncertain times, manufacturers and retailers would be wise to focus on offering colour ways that represent a long term style solution.
