That sinking feeling

For many years the sink industry has played around with different designs, shapes, materials and colours, yet we always seem to arrive back where we started - rectangular sinks, in either stainless steel or composite white/black. Most European manufacturers have introduced alternative shapes and styles over the years, but these are really fringe designs and the traditional rectangular shaped sink has always maintained centre stage.

Even with the introduction of centre islands we still see mainly rectangular designs going in. Why not a good-sized, square design workstation with food preparation areas, built in waste disposal and draining area?  Or a mixture of shapes and materials is always interesting. One of the market leaders is currently experimenting with steel and glass and it would be fascinating to mix steel with ceramic or ceramic with glass. Throw in a mix of materials, straight edges and circles and see what comes out the other end!

I guess it all comes down to what customers will buy. And as a nation we are generally traditional, conservative and cautious, and we like to play it safe.

It is interesting, however, to see the impact that European designs are starting to have on kitchen doors - the amount of different styles and colours has never been greater. The question is - will we sink manufacturers soon have to play 'catch up' and start to bring more interesting sinks to the table? Let's hope so!
