Wet Rooms - an excellent choice for special needs
Published:  04 February, 2009

Bathing is an integral part of our lives and maintaining independence and dignity in the bathroom is paramount for people with special needs. Over 10% of our population suffers from some sort of disability and the bathroom can sometimes be one of the most difficult rooms in the home to use.

Members of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) are responding to this increasing need for easy access and easy use of bathroom products, and research and development continues at a fast pace. Some manufacturers are specialists in showering equipment and in recent years have developed the ‘wet room' concept to an advanced standard.

Ease of installation and use are high on the list of features required of a wet room. Manufacturers have created a number of different "tanking systems" which completely seal the bathroom. Wet rooms may be installed in a new property or may be retro fitted. The room is completely sealed so that excess water cannot leak out.

A wet room is ideal for use by a person in a wheel chair. Level tiled floor access can be maintained throughout and since the room is equipped with a central drain there is no requirement for a separate shower tray with its usual high sided lip. Furthermore there is no particular need for a glass or curtain enclosure.

An existing bathroom may be converted to a wet room within a week resulting in a bathing facility which is practical, easy to use and accessible. For everyone. With dignity.
