Whilst extraction is obviously the key function of any hood, technological developments, increased control and improved filter function are all themes that are central to design innovation. Research and development has already resulted in low noise levels coupled with efficient extraction and cutting edge design; now the aim is to offer the additional features that will enhance the hood's role within the kitchen.
Most obviously there is likely to be greater integration between the hood and the hob. Timers and remote controls are already part of the proposition when selecting a hood and some have the facility to operate automatically over a 24 hour period to maintain air circulation. What is likely is that there will be greater emphasis on air management in the wider context; potentially the hood could act as an air conditioning unit and exhibit energy-saving and green credentials by recovering heat from the discharged air.
In design terms, making the hood bespoke to the rest of the kitchen setting through the use of decorative panels is ever more important. In addition, it is more and more likely to serve as an integrated source of ambient light within the overall design scheme. Small video screens, to display recipes or monitor who is at the front door, may also be incorporated as the hood increasingly plays its role centre stage in the kitchen.
