Versatile Stainless Steel
Comment by GEOFFREY BAKER, Distributor of Foster in the UK
Published:  02 December, 2008

There was a time when stainless steel was considered a little industrial for domestic kitchens, but now more and more people are waking up to its charms and using it for worksurfaces and appliances in their kitchens to obtain a professional but luxurious look. Stainless steel can be easily fabricated into all sorts of strong, but lightweight shapes and it is eco-friendly, too, because it can be recycled easily at the end of its life. Extremely hygienic and easy to maintain, it is also resilient to heat, fire and sustained heavy use.

Many of us remember the ubiquitous stainless steel sinks that changed the way a kitchen looked post-war and continued to be sold in diy outlets, but later became less fashionable as they were tough and functional without being all that aesthecially pleasing. An alloy of steel, chromium and other metal elements such as nickel, inexpensive mass-produced stainless steel sinks often used a crude grade of steel. ‘But today's high-end kitchen materials bear little or no resemblance to this,' explains Geoffrey Baker, who has distributed sinks in all materials from his Leeds-based company for many years. ‘Our stainless steel from Italy is AISI 304 which is far superior to the 430 used on your average domestic sink.'

What has also influenced the popularity of stainless steel is the increased desirability of the streamlined, contemporary style and the ability of top kitchen studios to use stainless steel, but soften it with a clever use of colour for the vertical surfaces. In short, stainless steel doesn't have to look industrial anymore. ‘Stainless steel surfaces have been available in the UK for a while, but there wasn't anyone providing worksurfaces that could be seamlessly integrated with appliances such as hobs and sinks,‘ explains Geoffrey Baker. ‘We saw a gap in the market and it's with much excitement that we're distributing a range of Italian worksurfaces and appliances that answer consumer demand and they're available here, directly in the UK. In the past you couldn't get this kind of quality unless you bought an entire Italian kitchen.'
