Bathroom conference success despite last minute ‘reshuffle'
Published:  03 November, 2008

Gordon Brown's latest cabinet reshuffle created a last minute hitch for Yvonne Orgill, Chief Executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association ( BMA ) at this year's Bathroom Conference. Keynote speaker, Phil Woolas, MP, found himself unable to attend following the reshuffle. After urgent negotiations Orgill was delighted to announce that Peter Jiggins from DEFRA had stepped into the breach.

The conference, was held in Warwickshire with 200 delegates from across the industry. The theme was ‘Sustainable Solutions - Awareness, Engagement, Action,' and seven speakers created lively discussions. An exhibition of twenty bathrooms-related companies accompanied the conference.

Wayne Hemingway, MBE, was the highlight of the day-long programme. For almost an hour Hemingway, the creator of the iconic Red or Dead fashion brand, spoke about his company and his unconventional approach to design. "Design is about breaking rules" said Hemingway "it's about stretching boundaries and embracing the mass market."

He went on to discuss his growing role in housing design and his plans for building sustainable communities. He showed his housing designs and concluded by talking about building for life. He was keen to ensure that delegates went away understanding that houses were not just bricks and mortar but that they should be designed as "proper homes" which were sustainable, with a low carbon foot print and with human interaction as top priority.
