The rise and rise of contemporary kitchens
By WAYNE DANCE, Managing Director, In-House

A UK-based kitchen retailer that does not display at least one contemporary kitchen is rare indeed. We have all experienced the groundswell of public demand of all things modern and have geared up accordingly, though some quicker than others I might add!

So how long is this “gravy train” going to continue to run for? I’m sure we all have our own opinions on this subject but I genuinely cannot see things changing in the short or even medium term.

Kitchen manufacturers have played their part in prolonging the life-cycle of contemporary design by constantly evolving their own offerings of modern cabinetry; in fact, many of us are now on our third or fourth generation of kitchen ranges that fall within this category.

At In-House we have a unique insight as to how trends develop as we represent brands from both Germany and Italy. Aster (Italian) is at the very cutting edge of contemporary vogue by creating kitchens that push the boundaries of both design and manufacturing expertise.

Curves and bow-fronted units adorned with brightly coloured and highly lacquered doors are the company’s signature and though not for the masses, Aster kitchens along with competitive Italian brands are extremely popular in urban areas like Kensington and Chelsea in London.

Schuller, our German supplier, along with other mainstream German, English and even French kitchen manufacturers have definitely taken influences from their Italian cousins over the years.

German kitchens in particular were renowned for their rigid linear lines and although they meet today’s consumer criteria, manufacturers from Germany are right up there with the best when it comes to contemporary design flair.

So, if you are a retailer reading this, my advice is to continue to display and sell modern kitchens with confidence in the knowledge that they are not going to go out of fashion for a long time.

Get a good mix of contemporary styles, finishes, colours, etc., and depending on where your showroom is located and showroom space available, do consider including something more traditional for those who are not turned on by current trends.
