Don't forget the environment when new housebuilds will focus on social housing sector
Comment by GARY HAWKINS, General Manager of Impulse Bathrooms
Published:  10 October, 2008

Impulse Bathrooms General Manager Gary Hawkins, comments on water saving as part of an eco-friendly approach to the environment. Despite the downturn in new house building, the government still has a target of three million more homes by 2020. As private housebuilds have fallen dramatically then social housing will be needed to fill the gap.

There is growing demand for eco-friendly products in this area and in bathrooms this means water saving products. Government intent published in the 'Water Efficiency in new buildings' statement wants an eco-friendly approach to lead to a changing of attitudes towards water wastage.

Low volume WC flushing is a key water saving opportunity and proven 4.5/3 litre dual flush cisterns are now available as well as 6/3 litre types.

The word proven is important as some lower flush WC's do not provide the 2.5 litres of trailing water necessary - and required under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 to ensure waste is cleared to the drains.

There is also a growing desire to use 'grey water' for toilet flushing rather than wasting potable water for this use. Impulse cistern fittings are suitable for use with 'grey water'. However the key is to make sure that the products do actually 'do what it says on the can'.
