The thinking kitchen
Published:  05 September, 2008

Preparation, cooking and, as often as not these days, eating food are the glamour sides of kitchens. The elements that designers focus on for presentational purposes. Storage is usually planned at the design stage too, of course, but on many branded kitchens amounts to not much more than cupboard space. But as anyone who is even vaguely familiar with what goes on in kitchens, the job of storage is not to just to hide things away - it's also to make them easy to find and readily accessible.

The really clever bits in today's well-thought-out kitchen are designs within a design. Storage that has been developed with a specific role in mind - a shape within a space supported and mobilised by roller bearings or swing-out technology or revolver pivots the job of all of which is to bring whatever is needed to the forefront and to deliver it into the hand of the user.

And it's not wizardry just for the sake of making storage easy to use; it makes it more practical too. Because things are easier to find, the contents of kitchen cabinets can now be part of planned usage - not just items STORED, put away never to be seen again before the annual spring clean!

Häfele has the biggest range of storage media and devices from a single source in Britain and they can all be accessed and compared on the website. It's an Alladin's cave!
